Fact or fiction?

After the FBI rounded up a number of organized crime figures in Chicago, the Chicago crime syndicate decided to stay under the law enforcement’s radar by forming an alliance with a local street gang. The Organization provided the gang with a source of funding to fuel their narcotics enterprises, and in exchange received a cut of the profits.

While the Organization’s main objective was to make money over the long haul and at the same time appear respectable, the gang members were more concerned with wearing their gang colors and projecting their status. As the gang attempted to gain dominance of the drug trade over other street gangs, the city started experiencing an increase in homicides and shootings. To combat the violence, the Chicago Police Department and the FBI’s Chicago field office created a joint operation code named COMBAT. The operation was structured for federal agents to operate from various police precincts and team up with police detectives, gang crime specialists, and patrol officers. The COMBAT teams saturated targeted neighborhoods and started arresting suspected gang members.

The COMBAT sweeps led to a large number of arrests and many of the gang members arrested began to flip on the mob. Consequently, the FBI formed a special task force to specifically investigate the mob. Following a crackdown on organized crime, the Chicago crime syndicate decided to use the unregulated dental industry to better camouflage its operations. After the mobsters acquired dental labs and supply houses, they formed a new corporation called International Dental Supply Company and in its shadow the mobsters began operating as well-dressed businessman.
